Private pay

Most families pay the provider directly from savings, income or family help. You agree on hours and rates before care starts, and you can change the schedule as needs change.

Long term care insurance

Many long term care policies pay for in home care or assisted living once the person needs help with daily activities. Most have an elimination period, a waiting time before benefits start. Ask the insurer what the policy covers.

VA benefits

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for help paying for care:

  • Aid and Attendance is an added monthly payment on top of a VA pension for people who need help with daily activities.
  • Homemaker and Home Health Aide care is a VA health care program that may provide in home care for eligible veterans.

Reach the VA at 1-800-827-1000 to check eligibility.

Medicaid

Each state runs its own Medicaid program (in California it’s called Medi-Cal). For people who qualify based on income and need, it may pay for some care at home through state and county programs, and some programs help with assisted living. Rules differ by state, so check with your local Medicaid office.

What about Medicare?

Medicare usually doesn’t pay for ongoing help with daily living, like bathing, meals or companionship. It can cover part time skilled home health care when a doctor orders it and the person is homebound.

So we can recommend providers that fit your budget and accept your payment options.

  • Does Hailo Care accept insurance?
